    Why a "cage"? The corroded construction fence that surrounds the rusted lockers and faded rubber gym floors dusted with chalk? The prodigious plates and bars, straight and true? The CAGE is much more than the sum of its parts. It is about people from all walks of life coming together to share a passion for the iron. This is fitting because The CAGE is built, from the ground up, by those same passionate individuals -- fans and athletes who volunteer their time, dedicated employees who can't wait for this one weekend all year long in the dead of winter in Columbus, Ohio. Though it's cold outside, inside The CAGE there's plenty of heart and the fire burns hot.

    The Arnold Fitness Expo is a three day extravaganza held in Columbus, Ohio every year. In those three days, close to two hundred thousand spectators, fans, and athletes descend upon the Greater Columbus Convention Center to check out the latest booths hawking the trendiest clothing and fancy supplements. The prodigious crowds, the freaky sights, and the cacophony of sounds -- it's an assault to the senses. But in the middle of it all, an oasis... The Cage.

    On May 22, 2011 the deadliest tornado in the United States since 1947 drove through the city of Joplin, Missouri, killing 161 people, obliterating 8,000 buildings and ultimately causing $2.8 billion in damages. Mathieu Asselin traveled to Joplin the week after the storm, documenting the new landscape and seeking expression in the faces of those who had experienced that the notion of controlling our lives is just that: a mere notion. Mathieu Asselin is the Grand Prize Winner of the 2011 One Life Photography Competition.

    2005 - 2006

    The New Pop Sensation… ahem, The New Pop.

    “Video to me is the storytelling medium of our generation… So I thought, OK, let’s do this on the cheap, I’ll invite my friends, follow them around, shoot short portraits… that was the birth of [The] New Pop!”

     

    “I originally called it The New Pop Sensation… I was playing on words, like “Let’s make it really corny,” like Britney Spears, etc.”

    2006

    Tone & Texas

    “…originally I would find my artists through MySpace, back when MySpace was the site for musicians… I started seeing that MySpace had more than just musicians, they had photographers, they had graffiti artists…Tone was one of the photographers, and I was just blown away by his work. Texas, a wonderfully talented photographer in her own right, I met through Tone.”

     

    “We would move as a unit, documenting the music, art and fashion scene downtown and in Brooklyn on a nightly basis. Texas and Tone would take photos, and I would shoot video which would all be posted on the site within that week. Our photos and video always made people wish they were there. To this date there still isn’t a unit that moved like we did.”

     

    We partied almost every night and every where we went, we were almost always the only ones with cameras. This is pre-dslr and phone or camera video.

    2007

    It's a New Pop Party!

    “The videos that I used to do were all about “let’s party, let’s hang out, I’ll bring my camera, let’s document our lives,”

    URB magazine was our first recognized press.

    2008

    URB Magazine "Next 100"

    We were selected in this popular annual issue as pioneers of video blogging, or "vlogging" as they dubbed it. It wasn’t the article that launched a thousand clients. But it is one of the brighter patches in The New Pop [history]. I point to that and people know that I have been around the block and was there from the beginning.”

    Politics ruled the day, we published several videos culminating with Trevz impromptu trip to the historic inauguration.

    2008

    Obama Or Bust!

    New Pop gets political.

    We were happiest before the soon to follow breakup of The New Pop original crew.

    2009

    Change

    The original crew part ways, Trevz remains at the helm.

     

    The New Pop shoots it’s first DSLR and fictional project “The Scene” which Trevz promises will never be seen again.

    This online series was and still is ahead of it's time. I keep promising Luna that i will one day come back to this project.

    2011

    Pluggedin

    Trevz & Luna Vega launch an interactive online series “pluggedin” where guest panelist battle it out over hot topic social media issues.

    Trevz launches “The Videographers Guide” video series and book collection.

    Most of our interns are now most of our crew.

    The Crew 2.0

    The New Pop travels to Australia to work on it’s first feature length documentary “The Journey to CAPO” as a new crew starts to take shape. New Pop Media Incorporates.

    Our DIY Screening Room Office Space features a 100" projector screen!

    2013 - 2014

    The Screening Room

    After 8 years at the South Williamsburg Broadway location New Pop Media moves into a new office at 12 Meserole street “The Screening Room” and opens it up for fellow Videographers.
